The Victims of Power Relations
"If you want that (famous) director, you have to accompany me tonight," a complaint that survivors often tell Adrian. In general, newcomers or volunteers are often easy targets for sexual harassment perpetrators. Newcomers are considered vulnerable, easily deceived, and always obedient. This stigma ultimately shapes the intentions of superiors to exploit the situation.
Then, Tiara shared her personal experience, explaining how the motives of the perpetrators are very subtle. "It starts during the reading script, where the perpetrator acts friendly and gradually we become open, they slowly approach us, and eventually various forms of sexual harassment are seen as normal." said the actor who has been in the film industry for 2 years.
Vre added that harassment in the film industry has occurred even during pre-production. In the past, when Vre was interning at an agency, there was a time when he met with an investor and a producer. From the beginning to the end of the meeting, the investor did not stop flirting. He could only remain silent because he felt like a 'newbie' who wasn't worthy of complaining.
Survivor Story Space
Adrian and Tiara admitted that there has not yet been a specific space in the film industry where survivors can talk freely. “In the film industry, we only discuss technical operational standards, there are no regulations that bind if there is sexual harassment,” Adrian emphasized. Tiara mentioned that many victims do not speak up because they feel ashamed and fear being judged, instead, the victims introspect on why they could be harassed. These thoughts hinder self-recovery and the awareness of the perpetrators.
Fortunately, now there are many communities that have been brave enough to step up and speak out about eradicating sexual harassment in the industry, such as Never Okay Project. Tiara believes that “small ripples can create big waves.” This statement reinforces that the Never Okay Project movement in providing education about sexual harassment and guidelines for helping survivors is getting stronger.
Thus, the Never Okay Project (NOP) and all cinematic communities fighting to create a workplace free from sexual harassment will always synergize. Through this Hangout with Never Okay Project, it is hoped that every industry realizes the importance of a comfortable and safe workplace.
